A catastrophic railway catastrophe that happened on June 2 in the Balasore region of Odisha is believed to have killed at least 288 people. The wounded passengers have also been sent to medical centres in Gopalpur, Khantapara, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Soro, totaling about 650.

A significant railway disaster involving two express trains—the Yashwantpur-Howrah Express and the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express—as well as a cargo train took place in the Balasore district of Odisha on June 2. Tragically, it is reported that a minimum of 288 people have died and a great number of others have been hurt.

Large cranes and bulldozers were used in the ongoing rescue efforts to remove coaches that rescue crews were previously unable to access. The activities were designed to recover survivors and those who died from the highly shattered steel wreckage of three trains. The recovery activities were facilitated by the use of these large apparatus and equipment.

The derailment site was visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this afternoon, and he evaluated the relief operations that are still in progress there. He spoke with local leaders, those providing disaster help, and railway officials while he was there to get their firsthand accounts of the relief efforts and their perspectives.

A signal was originally granted and then removed for the Coromandel Express, according to a preliminary examination by a team of railway authorities. As a result, the train entered the Loop Line and struck the freight train, resulting in the sad occurrence.

According to statistics, the train crash, which is thought to be the fourth worst in India, took place not far from the Bahanaga Baazar station, which is located in the Balasore district. The event happened about 170 kilometres north of Bhubaneswar and 250 km south of Kolkata. The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday about 7 o'clock.

An official statement claims that many coaches on the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed and fell into other lines as it travelled to Howrah. Due to the collision between these derailed coaches and the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, both trains' coaches overturned.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declared a one-day State of mourning as a show of respect and memory for the lives lost in the terrible occurrence following the horrific quadruple train collision.

In the wake of the triple train catastrophe, the government of Odisha has set up a special helpline with the telephone number 06782-262286 to offer aid and support. Additionally, various areas now have access to distinct railway helplines: for Howrah, dial 033-26382217; for Kharagpur, dial 8972073925; for Balasore, dial 8249591559; and for Chennai, dial 044-25330952. These hotlines provide as points of communication for those who want information, want to report an emergency, or need assistance with something to do with railroads.

According to a press release, commuters and worried family members should contact the hotline and control office at 044-25330952, 044-25330953, and 044-25354771.
